Functions and Applications
Arsenic trioxide (As2O3) has a variety of industrial uses, but its uses have decreased over time due to its toxicity. Here are some of its major industrial applications:
Glass Manufacturing: Arsenic trioxide is used as a fining agent in glass production. It helps remove tiny air bubbles, producing a clearer glass product.
Wood Preservative: Arsenic trioxide in the form of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) has been widely used as a wood preservative to prevent rot and insect damage. However, many countries limit or ban its use in residential settings due to health and environmental concerns.
Pesticides: Arsenic trioxide has historically been used in a variety of pesticides to control pests such as insects, fungi and weeds. However, its use has decreased significantly due to environmental and health risks.
Mining: Arsenic trioxide is a by-product of certain metal smelting processes, such as copper and lead production. Sometimes recovered from flue gases from smelting processes.
Pharmaceutical Industry: Arsenic trioxide has been used to treat a specific type of cancer called acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). It acts as an anticancer agent by inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells.
