  • Application of nano silica in coatings

    Nano-silica is a nanomaterial with great industrial application prospects, and its application fields are very wide, almost involving all the industries that use SiO2 powder.     In architectural coatings: The experimental results show that the thixotypic properties and stability of the coatings, as well as the adhesion, gloss, water resistance, alkali resistance, wash resistance and stain resistance of the coatings can be significantly improved by adding 4% nano-silica.

    In metal protective coatings: When 1.5%(mass fraction) of nano-silica is added, the fire resistance limit of 110min can be reached.What’s more, the filling of nano silica particles can effectively prevent the penetration and corrosion of the corrosive medium, and the nano silica-silicone composite coating has better protection performance than the silicone varnish coating and micron silica-silicone composite coating.

    In plastic coatings: The modified nano silica is beneficial to improve the thermal stability of the composite, delay the thermal oxidation degradation of polyethylene, and significantly improve the flame retardant properties of halogen-free flame retardant polyethylene. The material with good mechanical properties and flame retardant properties can be obtained at the same filler dosage.

    In UV-curable coatings: Spectrophotometer test shows that the absorption rate of nano-silica to ultraviolet light within 400nm is more than 70%, and the reflectivity of infrared light within 400nm is more than 70%. When added to the coating, it can form a shielding effect on the coating, achieve the role of anti-ultraviolet aging and thermal aging, and increase the heat insulation of the coating.

    In color inkjet printing paper coating: Nanoscale silica can provide high smoothness, absorption properties, color density and image quality to the paper. Using silica and polyvinyl alcohol as raw materials, adding appropriate amount of cationic additives to prepare the color spray paper coating with moderate viscosity, a wide range of paper base adaptation, no formaldehyde, good printing effect, and all using domestic raw materials.

    In wood coatings: In waterborne wood coatings, the addition of nano silica gel can improve the hardness of the film, improve the water resistance and aging resistance of the film, and also improve the adhesion resistance of the film.
